Rock Your Poetry

December 15, 2011 at 07:00PM

Two nights ago, I did an opening beatbox performance for the Rock Your Body Fashion Dance Benefit at the SoHo Mixed Media Bar presented by National Dance Week Hawaii and Dancers Unlimited. Here I am rocking the Far East Movement x Subcrew cap, the O.W.W.L (One World With Love) shirt and my Radii 420 Top sneakers.

Now onto poetry slam. I want to give a shout out to @NctrnlBst of Nonstop Honolulu for covering December 2011's First Thursdays "No Rules" Poetry Slam (non-qualifier to the Grand Slam Finals) with ukulele virtuoso Taimane Gardner as the…

Father's Day Weekend

June 21, 2011 at 08:20PM

What a productive last week and Father's Day weekend. It was anticipated on my calendar to be an intense week. On Thursday I taught 2 summer school classes early in the morning on the history and culture of beatboxing. Several students there remember when I performed at the school they graduated from several weeks prior. Before I came home from that adventure TEDxHonolulu uploaded and tagged me to their June auditions photo. That was when folks on Facebook made their voice heard. I want to thank Kitty for being the trend setter that she is and everyone who submitted "Jason Tom" to be a potential TEDxHonolulu presenter on 11.11.11 11.1.11. You can still nominate a potential presenter for 11.11.11 11.1.11 with "ideas worth spreading" for a total of two upcoming July au…

TEDxHonolulu

December 4, 2009 at 12:24AM

Early last month I was a guest entertainer for the TEDxHonolulu (TEDxHNL) conference which took place at the Hawaii Convention Center. "TED" of "TEDx" is a acronym for "Technology, Entertainment, Design," and the "x" of "TEDx" represent "an independently organized TED event." TED's motto is "ideas worth spreading."

I want to thank Janel and Nari for accompanying me.  Props to Ninja Nari for the vids:

Angela Keen: How long have you been doing this?

Jason Tom: Performing wise 5 years, but I've been doing this since I was 4-years-old.
*Playfully says* I was holding back by the way. *laughs*

*crowd laughs along*

Jason Tom TEDxHNL

November 4, 2009 at 11:16AM

This TEDTalks' video was filmed on February 2003 (though posted on October 2008), filmed more than a year before I started performing as a beatboxer. Now when I watch it again I find it to be inspiring hearing his snares, vocal turntable techniques, and style. He is quite original.

On May 14, 2009 my general manager sent me this video of James "AudioPoet" Burchfield. Prior to that I googled "beatbox poet" since I find myself mostly connected with the Hawaiʻi poetry scene (as opposed to the Hawaiʻi hip-hop scene) as a beatboxer, and that same vid popped up. My first impression was that it reminded me of a similar setting of a performance I did on February 9, 2009 as a guest artist for a UH Manoa speech class. I even had the same mic set up.

Reason I bring …

Aye that's lit. Keep doing what you're doing and you're putting a positive influence to a lot people

Jason Tom is a one-of-a-kind individual. During my sophomore year of high school, I remember watching him beatbox for our school for just a few minutes and was blown away by the amount of talent he was able to showcase in just that limited amount of time. Fast forward about three years or so, I was looking to write a feature story of a KCC alumnus/alumna for the KCC newspaper and came across Jason's name online. He was quick to respond to me when I reached out to him, and he was very interested in being featured. I got the chance to interview him, and couldn't believe the stories that he had to share with me. Over a two hour period, I was able to learn a lot about who Jason was, and he has proved to me that anybody can make it in life when even in the toughest situations. His humor and charismatic nature really bring his personality to life, and I blows me away to know that he has a positive impact on the community not only through his beatboxing but also through his words. Jason is inspiring, and I'm glad that I got to chat with him and share his story with many others and beyond.

Cool, you will become more popular.

That would be really cool to see that! It would be an honor!

Happy to say that the story of Jason has been published and can be read on our Kapi'o website at https://www.kapionews.com/index.php/2017/07/19/kcc-alumnus-inspires-community-through-beatboxing-motivational-speaking/. Thanks again Jason for allowing me the opportunity to share your story with many others, and for shedding light on our growing student newspaper! Check out kapionews.com for more!

This is awesome! Well-deserved for bradda Jason! This guy knows how to work hard, puts himself out there and performs. He also knows how to give back

Cool, you would become more popular.
