Beatboxing In Chinatown
Jason Tom, 29, is a beatboxer whose unique sounds landed him in the world of slam poetry. He has been involved with slam poetry for six years now. Tom's intersection of beatboxing and slam poetry makes him a special breed in Chinatown. He said that the beauty of the two art forms is that both utilize the human voice.
Tom lives in the heart of Chinatown and he draws inspiration from the streets and people. His favorite place to watch his fellow slam poets is Fresh Cafe on Queen Street. Fresh Cafe hosts HawaiiSlam, the hottest event on First Thursdays to enjoy the poetry and some friendly competition. He has learned a lot of life lessons from the spiritually and highly philosophical elements of slam poetry. Tom advises others after his emersion into the craft, "do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."
