Freelance Brand Waikiki

September 26, 2013 at 02:22PM

Earlier this week I cruised with the Freelance Brand fam (shout out to model Keshia Mieko) after a performance and @honozooloo snapped photos of us in Waikiki. I'm laced with Freelance's brand new Plumeria 5 panel leather bill (with an original Aloha olioli underbill, only 50 made), black on black hoody, and red backpack. The other new addition is the raw denim snapback with three interchangeable patches. You can get your's at Sera's Surf and Shore (Ala Moana Shopping Center), iKandy Hawaii, 88 Tees, and more. While out in Waikiki, Whoop and I also did a spontaneous video for Instagram here. #freelancebrand #freelancefam

Hawaii Beatbox School

August 5, 2013 at 06:10PM

Jason Tom "Love Letters"

In 2004, Hawaii's human beatbox Jason Tom started a beatbox performance ministry. Before First Fridays Hawaii (the underground art and music scene in Chinatown Honolulu) existed and back when First Thursdays HawaiiSlam was perhaps the most popular event in Chinatown at the time (Studio1 and pre-Fresh Café days). In 2006, Jason began a teaching ministry by facilitating a human beatbox workshop at Central Middle School. In late 2008, he re-kicked started his beatboxing path at Word of Life Emerge, and also facilitated a human beatbox workshop at Word of Life Academy (pre-Kidz Life).

In 2009, Jason performed at the Diverse Art Center for Word of Life Emerge. Then in 2010, he teamed up with the Diverse Art Center and facilitated weekly beatboxi…

New Creation In Christ

June 18, 2013 at 09:05PM

Here is my testimony about my personal Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus. In 2008, my friend Janel invited me to a conference at the Waikiki Shell featuring the Katinas. God spoke to me during this conference and I did the salvation prayer with all my heart (he knocked on the door of my heart and I opened that door for him to come in).

Then my mentor John recommended that I pray to God to be planted at a home church. God heard my prayer and on Friday, October 24th, 2008 my friend Cherryanne invited me to Word of Life Hawaii (Pastor Art and Kuna Sepulveda) to enter the Emerge Talent Show (where I met my then Life Group Leader Jarmal) and Jim invited to facilitate a human beatbox workshop at Word of Life Academy (WOLA).

The night of the Emerge Talent Show I prayed to God, …

What Influenced Me to Start Beatboxing

May 4, 2013 at 05:13PM

I get asked from time to time how I got influenced into what I do with the art of beatboxing. To summarize, it essentially started off (during the pre-YouTube era) with Michael Jackson's music, then Michael Jackson as an artist, which gradually expanded to life experiences and other influences including Rahzel, Elaine Chao, and more along the way (i.e. Bobby McFerrin, Michael Winslow, Doug E. Fresh, etc.). To be more specific and in depth... I decided to devote this blog entry about my adventure into the beatboxing realm and the story starts off below this paragraph...

It all began being exposed at an early age during the mid 1980's to the Michael Jackson song "Bad." Also seeing several versions of the music video on television for "Bad" such as the original version…

Coldplay Paradise Project

December 12, 2011 at 09:07PM

If you folks remember, I was in the Bay Area of California for the Estria Graffiti Battle Invitational week of events earlier this year. For all you Coldplay fans out there, while there, I got picked up by an advertising agency firm to beatbox a recording for a Coldplay project on their song "Paradise." It was a lot of fun to work on, but unfortunately that project got canceled due to unforeseen circumstances.

It's not the first time a recording project I've worked on did not see the light of day as things do not always go as planned, but as always I'm gonna keep on truckin'. Speaking of Coldplay's "Paradise," here is Coldplay playing their "Paradise" song live at the Austin City Limits Music Festival, a great performance.

Pray for Japan

March 15, 2011 at 07:11AM

My prayers goes out to Japan! I know that recent current events is affecting many of us one way or another. Relief efforts are being worked on as I type on the Hawaii end. Hawaii also had tsunami warning sirens go off like crazy last week and a lot is happening.

Life of a beatboxer does not stop though and as tough as it is I needed to follow through with my pre-engagements. On Saturday, March 12th at 8:00AM HST I was invited weeks in advance to guest judge the Worldwide Ventrilo Beatbox Battle on VentBBX.com. Congratulations to Slurp of Norway on winning that Ventrilo Beatbox Battle! Early in my career I've worked with Norway rapper TKB, but I have not heard from him in years. Then on Sunday I performed for Lola-Palooza for the newly turned 1-year-old Lola and fell u…

Happy 2011 to All

January 2, 2011 at 09:13AM

Happy 2011 to all!! It feels good to be Twenty-Eleven!

I've personally been waiting for 2011 for a long while now ever since I came back to Honolulu from NYC in September 2010. I often feel, now more than before, that time is behind and it needs to catch up. You ever felt or feel that way or is it just me?

How was your 2010? Have you reflected upon your reach of goals, dreams and aspirations in 2010?

Reflecting back: year 2010 was a productive one and I would title it the "Year of the Hustle." I worked against many odds and set backs. Set backs that could go on for days. But I'll blog just about one: I went without a working home computer for the majority of 2010. I adapted best I could to the limited net access (folks that know me know that I don't have a cell phone

Michael Jackson Movie Night Photo Recap:

I bought these IMAX movie tickets in advance on Wednesday, October 28th, and each came with a Michael Jackson "This Is It" movie concert tag. I caught the movie with 15 or so friends on Sunday, November 1st. My reaction: This Is Exc"It"ing.

I got to Regal Dole Cannery Stadium 18 & IMAX early to wait for friends to arrive.

Testing out lighting on a 3-year-old cam.

I am the Michael Jackson ticket go-to man for tonight.

This time it isn't the camera's fault, we're really that bright.

I travel and I had a blast on my trip to Los Angeles. I went there for the International Secret Agents LA 2009 concert. I was considered to be featured in this past ISA LA 2009 concert when my fans and supporters wrote to ISA to make it happen though it didn't fall through. I want to thank the fam for pushing that.

I brought my camera with me to share about this trip.

Anyone caught or plan to see Mongol?

July 27, 2008 at 09:17AM

Now while people have been buzzing about the Dark Knight, Wall-E, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Hancock, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Kung Fu Panda, Wanted, Hellboy II: the Golden Army, and all those other blockbuster goodies coming out. There is one Art House release that I'm most anticipating to see over any other movie coming out right now, and that is Mongol. The movie poster simply state, "The Untold Story of Genghis Khan." Since Mongol is an Art House independant film, it's only playing in select areas. So be sure to check whether or not it will be or is showing in yours. On O`ahu, it's now playing at Kahala 8 Cinema.

Anyway check this out:

Some great non-fiction books about the dance culture I love include Foundation by Joseph Schloss, which is an excellent book about NYC B-boy/B-girl or breaking/breakdance culture, Can't Stop Won't Stop by Jeff Chang, which is a great historical analysis of American Hip Hop culture, and The Underground is Massive by Michelangelo Mathos, an amazing history of electronic dance music culture. Happy reading everyone :)

Enders Game, The Great Gatsby, Of Men and Mice, Maximum Ride. I need to read more books. I haven't read so long Bc I've been attached to the ones I've already read.

Aye that's lit. Keep doing what you're doing and you're putting a positive influence to a lot people

Jason Tom is a one-of-a-kind individual. During my sophomore year of high school, I remember watching him beatbox for our school for just a few minutes and was blown away by the amount of talent he was able to showcase in just that limited amount of time. Fast forward about three years or so, I was looking to write a feature story of a KCC alumnus/alumna for the KCC newspaper and came across Jason's name online. He was quick to respond to me when I reached out to him, and he was very interested in being featured. I got the chance to interview him, and couldn't believe the stories that he had to share with me. Over a two hour period, I was able to learn a lot about who Jason was, and he has proved to me that anybody can make it in life when even in the toughest situations. His humor and charismatic nature really bring his personality to life, and I blows me away to know that he has a positive impact on the community not only through his beatboxing but also through his words. Jason is inspiring, and I'm glad that I got to chat with him and share his story with many others and beyond.
