It's official!!! I will be offering a beatboxing (vocal percussion) class for an after school program on Oahu. Big thank you goes out to Shelly, the Human Beatbox Academy's Jocelyn and Noa and friends! Below is the beatboxing class as seen in the program's catalog.
Vocal Percussion - the Art of Beatboxing
Jason Tom is a walking, talking instrument; an energetic combination of drums, snare, vocals and synthesizer, all replicated using his voice.
Class Description - All Grades
It starts with a heartbeat. A person has an inner beat, melody, voice and rhythm from within that can be brought out through the art of vocal percussion. This class focuses on the expression, foundation, fundamentals, history, beats, rhythms, and techniques in beatboxing. Curriculum includes how to express creatively unique sounds and rhythm with the human voice, how to develop stage presence and more.
Instructor Jason Tom
Hawaii's human beatbox Jason Tom emerged out of Honolulu's Chinatown, and beatboxed for fun since the age of four. He took to it on stage and in 2004 through performances, collaborations, poetry slams, conferences, social media, open mics, and competitions. He has taught this art form since 2006 at elementary and middle schools, the Diverse Art Center, the ArtSmith and in 2011 founded Hawaii's first beatbox school, the Human Beatbox Academy. Jason Tom is currently on the Music With A Message® tour performing at Oahu's middle schools and high schools. He is featured in the latest issue of HMSA's Island Scene magazine (winter 2013).
