Bible Shopping at Logos Bookstore

May 13, 2017 at 11:46PM

My Word of Life brother in Christ Jesus and Life Group leader and mentor John Lum on Team Wally told me recently that he wants to purchase a new New King James Version translation of the Holy Bible as his original copy has pages falling apart. Then I said that I will bless him with a new one. We kicked off our day by having breakfast at L&L Hawaiian Barbecue and then we went bible shopping for the NKJV Bible at Logos Bookstore in Kakaako. Then while we waited in line, we met this gentleman in front of us by the name of Kenny and his wife Jackie. When it was Kenny's turn to purchase their items. Kenny took John and I by surprise and he said he will bless us both. Favor! God's favor! So grateful to you Jesus for all you do! Thank you Kenny! Thank you Jesus! Thank you John! We love you Jesus! We are the Men of God that we are Today, because of you Jesus! We are all grateful for all you do Jesus! We love you Jesus!

Story on this Gecko, Man

May 8, 2017 at 08:51AM

One of my early comic book character creations of approximately 25 to 27 years, during my second attempt at first grade when I moved to another elementary school and second grade through third grade, is Gecko Man. I drew Gecko Man then as a reflection of who I was as a child though in an adult body with a cape with superhero strength and capabilities like laser shooting powers from my hands with a superhero body spandex suit. Kind of like Spider-Man, Ice Man, Superman, and Batman. This Gecko Man character came to me when I put my hand on a pole and I felt warmth. I thought to myself, hmm, this doesn't feel hard like what a metal pole would feel like. Instead it felt soft and warm. So I looked under my hand was a gecko chilling on the pole even though I touched it. The gecko nor I were startled to my surprise, and I felt an immediate bond with this gecko. From there I felt like I had superpowers. I thought to myself then if I am to be an original superhero character, it would have to be Gecko Man. Geckos are known to make sounds, and I am also known to make sounds. I also associate geckos with positive thoughts and geckos are cool in my book. Then it hit me since last year, what if I am to revisit my Gecko Man character and have him be brought to life in this modern era as a reflection of who I am today as a musician, beatboxer and public speaker. Yes, Gecko Man, a music, public speaking and beatboxing mascot. So, though I am rusty with my doodling and drawing skills, I managed to sketch and doodle out roughly how Gecko Man could look today so that I could then have a better idea visually of this gecko character and then relay that over to the artist and muralist East-3 of Keep It Flowing Media, and I commissioned him with the great task to bring this gecko character to life.

Prior to this Gecko Man project that I am currently working on... I commissioned East-3 for the Jason Tom personal name logo as shown above. East-3 have also worked with clients Adidas, GQ Magazine, Kid Robot, Common and Echelon Clothing, DJ QBert and Thud Rumble, Illest, FatLace.com, Freelance Brand, Crazy Legs, Rock Steady CrewMighty4 Arts Foundation, Diverse Art Center, and many more.

Iolani School Boy Scouts

April 28, 2017 at 09:59PM

The number one fear in the world? Public speaking. Growing up on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu, I'd shake or freeze up from nervousness and shyness when speaking in front of class among my peers. Made me quite self-conscious. I preferred being in the audience and I feared having the spotlight. Fast forward to today, having performed live beatboxing music and having done public speaking engagements such as the first and second TEDx Talks in Honolulu and other engagements in hip-hop culture classrooms in universities and events through 13 years have compelled me to get out of my comfort zone to develop my current personality and today, I no longer get the jitters unless I stop practicing and training. Earlier tonight, I spoke publicly in front of Hawaii's 4th graders at…

Music Business And Audio Engineering

April 28, 2017 at 11:24AM

I stopped by the Mike Curb College MELE Program offered through Belmont University and University of Hawaii at Honolulu Community College advocated by Hawaii's former 2-term Governor Linda Lingle and Lieutenant Governor Duke Aiona. And while at Honolulu Community College to meet up with my friend early this week I ran into two current MELE Music Business and Audio Engineering students. Long story short, after our formal introduction, they tell me, "get out, you're Jason Tom, our teacher spoke about you this morning and how you're one of the top beatboxers in this world." I said, "wow, really? You mean Eric Lagrimas? He was my former teacher in the Mike Curb MELE Program." They responded, "yes, he covered about hip-hop music and he mentioned your name." Thank you …

My Heroes and Influences

April 21, 2017 at 10:07PM

Many of my heroes and influences are the people I grew up with and some are those I have watched from afar. Many I've met and many I haven't. My heroes include my family, relatives, friends, colleagues, past and presentAcademy beatboxers, people of all walks, my fans, and the community. Here is a list of those you may or may not recognize who I have been inspired by and have been influenced by in one way or another.

  • Maximus Ornelas (Sep 7, 2001 - Feb 26, 2017; age 15)
I have not met or known of Maximus George Ornelas until today when I stumbled upon his obituary article in the Yakima Herald and I read that he had passed on due to a severe asthma attack and that one of his passions is to beatbox.

I looked if he had a Facebook and discovered he had videos uploaded of him beatboxing and I watched them.. I can tell he was really into it and that he was very passionate about it. I also noticed that the photo used for the orbituary that he has on a Legend of Zelda hat.. that's one of my all-time favorite Nintendo Entertainment Series video games. It would have been nice to have met this young talented beatboxer.

My heart, thoughts, prayers, and condolences go out to his family, his friends, Lacrosse Middle School classmates, Christian Worship Center pastors and congregation and all those that will greatly miss him. I am in agreement that he is with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! As a born again beatboxer and I too have experienced asthma attacks... so severe I nearly lost my life.

The testimony of Maximus is a miracle when I read the article and I felt compelled to reach out to his family by reaching out with my sincere message of condolences, prayers, encouragement, edification, and support.

  • Gene Kelly (Aug 23, 1912 - Feb 2, 1996; age 83)

Gene Kelly is known for how he presented dance choreography in his MGM Grand classic such as "Singin' in the Rain," "An American in Paris" and "On the Town" that also featured Frank Sinatra to name several! Here is "Good Morning" performed by Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, and Donald O'Connor! A gem from Singin' in the Rain.
  • Bruce Lee (Nov 27, 1940 - Jul 20, 1973; age 32)

Bruce Lee is influential in my life where he inspired me in the way he expressed himself as a true martial arts fighter. His self-discipline and work ethic is ahead of its time. What he demonstrated on film through his martial arts and philosophies are being applied today by martial artists and non martial around the world today. During the years of childhood when I was physically bullied in school, Bruce Lee's movies were helpful in the way it gave me the confidence to defend myself when I replicated his fighting moves when I defended myself against the bullies and it worked. I am inspired he taught his own kung fu called Jun Fan Gung Fu or translated as Bruce Lee's Kung Fu and opened his first martial arts school called the Lee Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute in Seattle, Washington and a second school in Oakland, California. Bruce Lee's philosophies also showed he is more than brawn and that he indeed had an intellect and his philosophies can still be applied to anything and everything in daily life. One of my favorite quotes of his is, "I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times." I apply this very principle to when I practice and work on and isolate a single beatboxing sound. That could be the bass kick drum, hi-hat or snare. I'd work on a single sound repetitiously to master it to develop the greatest characteristic for the sound and carry out the emotional intent behind it. My favorite Bruce Lee film is the Way of the Dragon where he fought the World Karate Champion Chuck Norris in the Colosseum in Rome, Italy. Great fight choreography!
  • Bobby McFerrin (Mar 11, 1950 - age 67)

As most people are familiar with multi-Grammy Award winning jazz musician and vocalist Bobby McFerrin, I grew up hearing his hit classic "Don't Worry, Be Happy" on the radio. Others are also familiar that he did the Bill Cosby Show theme song. When I watched Bobby McFerrin's Spontaneous Inventions Music DVD, I was literally blown away how he floored a crowd of just him and his voice and one microphone. All improvisational too. He had guest musicians join him as well. This blew me away and had a very significant impact in my life.
  • Michael Jackson (Aug 29, 1958 - Jun 25, 2009; age 50)

Michael Jackson was huge in the 1980s and 1990s and was known popularly as the King of Pop, Rock and Soul. His song Bad from his album of the same title compelled me to start beatboxing at the age of 4. It was his follow up album to Bad, Dangerous that became the foundation of my beatboxing style and sounds. The Michael Jackson Dangerous album is the biggest selling New Jack Swing album of all time that was produced by Teddy Riley. New Jack Swing is a fusion of th…

Legend of Zelda Story at Hot Topic

April 15, 2017 at 01:22PM

Two years ago I met this trio Jennifer, Jeffrey and Charley at the Legend of Zelda section of the Ala Moana Center's Hot Topic store and one of them recognized me from one of my past performances at a hip-hop jam. I shared with them I was shopping for Legend of Zelda gear as I am about to prepare for my friend's son's 1st Birthday Party and the party theme is the Legend of Zelda. Then last year, Charley and Jennifer as well as the Kaimuki High School Band supported and voted for me in the NextNext Hawaii Music Competition and Charity Event where the proceeds from their votes went to the charity of my choice, the Ronald McDonald House Hawaii. Jennifer also shared with me that she was assisted by the Ronald McDonald House Charity and this meant so much to her a…

Thank You Inspire Youth

April 11, 2017 at 05:05AM

This was lit. I want to personally thank Inspire Youth's Pastor Clint Chinen and his head pastor Mike Kai for having me open for guest Pastor Jedidiah Thurner for Friday Night Flow at Inspire Church Waikele. We had 45 first-time decisions for Jesus Christ and 76 rededications. I've once been there for both Altar calls and I am grateful of what God has called me to do in the works of the ministry with my life and the life of others including the children, youth and young adults who made Friday Night Flow happen. I also want to thank Josh Williams also known as J Wills for beatboxing with me to close Friday Night Flow. And Josiah for beatbox battling me to assist me in setting the tone of Friday Night Flow evening prior to me opening for Jedidiah Thurner in the mai…

Thank You Lord

April 10, 2017 at 09:53AM

LYRICS:

VERSE
The atmosphere is changing now
For the Spirit of the Lord is here
The evidence is all around
That the Spirit of the Lord is here

CHORUS
Overflow in this place, fill our hearts with your
love
Your love, surrounds us
You’re the reason we came, to encounter your
love
Your love, surrounds us

BRIDGE
Spirit of God fall fresh on us
We need your presence
Your kingdom come, your will be done
Here as in heaven

FINAL VERSE
A miracle can happen now
For the Spirit of the Lord is here
The evidence is all around
That the Spirit of the Lord is here

I love this song "Here As In Heaven" by Elevation Worship.... it's my jam, it's my praise... I love you Jesus! I love you God!

Lord, I come boldly and humbly before your throne room of grace and mercy that endures forever in great Thanksgiving and with my whole heart fully surrendered to you. I praise you Lord, and I dedicate my life and career to you as a living testimony. I am forever grateful for your forgiveness, mercy, grace, patience, understanding, goodness, kindness, faithfulness, joy, love, provision, long-suffering, and your Mighty Hand of protection over my life and the lives of others and so many around the world. I also thank you for your deliverance, wisdom and guidance. I am grateful of having your watch over my life, because I nearly died from incoming traffic last year. You resurrected my Spirit Man in time of tremendous despair and now you're taking me into a season of restoration to become that new creature in You Christ Jesus that you've called me to be as a born again, that child of God you've called me to be and the Man of God that you've chosen, groomed and destined me to be. I shall never forget the Words you personally spoke to me during my personal encounter with you. I know I have not arrived and I will continue to ask and seek for more of your wisdom so that I may continue to grow mature in Your Word and My walk with you Lord Jesus! I love you God! Thank you Jesus! My savior! My friend. My brother. My protector. My hero. My King! My Lord! My Way Maker! I love you Jesus! I love you Holy Spirit! Hallelujah! Amen!

Jason Tom featured on Beatbox Battle TV

Jason Tom featured on Beatbox Battle TV:

Wonderful news! I browsed the Beatbox Battle Network website to discover that the "Jason Tom from Hawaii" Beatbox Battle TV video is among one of its top ranked videos in two of the categories it is listed in. On the website my video ranks as the Top 5 Beatbox Battle video in the "United States" country category among heroes and living legends Rahzel, Michael Winslow and Bobby McFerrin. I've had the humbling honor and experience of meeting and chopping it up with both Michael Winslow and Rahzel. How about that? I've also worked with Michael Winslow more than once, almost every beatboxer's dream come true. In the the "freestyle" category my Beatbox Battle video is the Top 4 video among my colleagues Tom Thum, Alem and…

My Female Beatbox Mentor

April 23, 2016 at 05:34PM

Elaine FinnellElaine Finnell (formerly known as Elaine Chao) is one of my earliest beatbox mentors. It's due to her inspirational Apollo live televised performance in 2003 that sparked an interest for me to pursue beatboxing professionally. Her snares, her mouth drumming, her scratches, crowd interaction is so on point!!! She was a co-worker of one of my first-cousins from the Bay Area.... who I am very close with. Elaine and I exchanged e-mails and she gave me wisdom and advice that it stuck with me forever. I apply everything she shared with me. It it weren't for her.. I wouldn't be the beatboxer that I am today. Thank you Elaine!!! You're the greatest female human beatbox of all time in my book!

Freelance Fam and Tom Thum

February 8, 2016 at 08:51AM

Spent quality time and enjoyed a meal together with the Freelance Fam Duke and Kiki King! We've believed in each other since the first time we met and have really grown together. We went through so much together, and we're a team! Words alone cannot express my level of gratitude for all the years of growing with the Freelance Fam!

I also received these "Jason Tom" handstyles by Tom Thum, fellow TEDx Talk beatboxer alumni. Not only is Tom Thum a world class beatboxer, but he also has talent in art and handstyles, bombing, and he was also a b-boy. My former beatbox students look up to him. I have tremendous respect for Tom Thum... I first took notice of him at the 1st Beatbox Battle World Championship in 2005... he was the first World Beatbox Tag Team Cha…

I am saddened to hear of the recent closing of Fresh Cafe Kakaako and Fresh Cafe Downtown! The downtown location was where the Honolulu Star-Advertiser interviewed me for a Today cover feature. I've also beatboxed there for First Fridays and other events. I remember it like it was yesterday when I beatboxed at one of the Kakaako location's first hip-hop events Last Call (2009), Freelance Brand's Apex (2010) & Trilogy II (2012), National Dance Week Hawaii All-Style Battle (2011), and Hawaii Slam's First Thursdays Poetry Slam & Open Mic (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015).

Here I am beatboxing for HawaiiSlam's First Thursdays at Fresh C…

The other new addition is the raw denim snapback with three interchangeable patches. You can get your's at Sera's Surf and Shore (Ala Moana Shopping Center), iKandy Hawaii, 88 Tees, and more. Hawaii Beatbox School

August 5, 2013 at 06:10PM

Jason Tom "Love Letters"

In 2004, Hawaii's human beatbox Jason Tom started a beatbox performance ministry. Before First Fridays Hawaii (the underground art and music scene in Chinatown Honolulu) existed and back when First Thursdays HawaiiSlam was perhaps the most popular event in Chinatown at the time (Studio1 and pre-Fresh Café days). In 2006, Jason began a teaching ministry by facilitating a human beatbox workshop at Central Middle School. In late 2008, he re-kicked started his beatboxing path at Word of Life Emerge, and also facilitated a human beatbox workshop at Word of Life Academy (pre-Kidz Life).

In 2009, Jason performed at the Diverse Art Center for Word of Life Emerge. Then in 2010, he teamed up with the Diverse Art Center and facilitated weekly beatboxi…

That's fresh logo as you are! Come down Japan and let's rock together!!

Aloha, Jason!!! So glad we connected. Great picture of you & Pastor Clint!

Keep spreading God's Word as you live your life.

God bless!

Super talented and what an awesome video!!!!! Blessings on this journey of yours where I hope you can inspire the younger generations with a twist of our culture and modern hip hop genre. This sure brings back childhood memories of mine taking ukulele lessons at roy sakuma in kaimuki and dancing for 24/7 danceforce ... the good old days hehehe!!!! Aloha :)

I like all of them, but as a personal brand the one done by the media company with the outline and Hawaii's Human Beatbox is my favorite. Tom Thum is so dope in everything he does but in this instance, as far as a brand logo, I like the last one on the post. Maybe mess with colors etc. have an aloha version maybe.

Love the Ton Thum logo...Dope!

So dope, all of it! :D

I really appreciate this logo and it has flavor and style!

I think ur logo great jason and cool also u shouldnt change that way its great

Aloha Jason,

Thank you for your kind words, this is a unique and awesome video, keep inspiring others to do well in their life, keep up with the beatboxing, it takes a lot of practice and dedicatication towards your goals what you want to achieve in life, I think you found it! Keep spreading the positive vibes it’s nice in meeting a new friends Aloha!

Awesome! So high energy and amazing spirit! Keep spreading your talents and positive vibes, God knows we need more love, laughter and aloha in this world!

Love your heroes :D Some of them at are mine too. Amazing journey and talent. But more importantly, you have a beautiful Soul and spirit Jason, and it's really nice to meet people like you :)

You are a man of many talents! A true renaissance man.
Every time I hear a gecko in my house, I feel a sense of peace. Gecko Man!

That is such a neat story and cool creation to use from it! I believe Jason Tom becomes more and more creative because he has an audience to speak to. Keep expressing JT! We're absorbing you!!

I am glad you are putting your dreams into reality! The only way to progress is to always push forward. Every step will lead you to your destination. I am wondering what your plans are for this logo? Honest opinion, visually, the color of him is a little washed out. Depending on how you brand this and use it, people may not understand what this is, but is an amazing vector and captures your personality and essence. I can't wait to see where this takes you!

I really like the concept and the drawing! Really moves the reader
