Veterans Day Legacy And Human Beatbox Workshops

November 11, 2017 at 07:00AM

I hope we, you and I, are able spend this Veteran's Day to reflect upon the brave men and women for their great service in our United States Armed Forces in the branches of Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. If you are a veteran or know someone who served, please feel free to pay homage to him and her by scrolling to the bottom of this post to leave a blog comment on this Veterans Day. I also share in this post my homage to an Army Veteran who is very dear to my heart and I also share about my recent desire to join the United States Air Force.

One Army veteran that comes to my mind is my uncle Danny. It was unexpected when he passed on at age 82. Danny was a retired architecture draftsman. As a child I visited his home office where I viewed his architectural hand drawn drafts and sketches. It amazed me. And at our family gatherings, uncle Danny told me he's read articles about me in the paper and he asked me regularly about my beatboxing career. It felt profound that my uncle Danny took a genuine interest in what I was doing as a beatboxer during his time with us and that struck a cord with me about him. I learned this week by my first cousin Philip that my uncle Danny was responsible for bringing his wife, who is my mother's oldest sister, my aunt, and the rest their siblings to the United States of America where my Mom met and married my Dad. My father passed on this year at age 84 on Father's Day. Today, for Veteran's Day, I'd like to dedicate and honor this post in memory of my Army veteran uncle Danny. I miss you uncle Danny and I love you Dad! Both of you sacrificed a lot to make it possible for me to be here today. I will continue to do what I do, because of what you both have instilled in me in character, discipline and maturity. I also have other family relatives and friends who served our nation. Shout out to my first cousin David who served in our United States Marine Corps. Thank you cousin David! I am grateful for the service of our Veterans. Thank you and I honor and respect all of our Veterans on this Veterans Day and the days throughout our calendar year!

One of the things I embarked this year was I got back into teaching after taking seasons off due to health reasons and I have to say it is rewarding to be able to enjoy teaching and paying it forward for our next generation. I know this is what my late uncle and father would want me to continue to do. I want to personally thank Coach Dom and Kim of Revive Christian Fellowship, Wally Matanza (who served in the Marine Corps), Boy Scouts of America, Iolani School, Hawaii Baptist Academy, Nicole Lam, Prisma Dance, Chanel Tanaka, Art Bridge Events, Pacific Ink & Art Expo, Nicole Kealoha, Kimberly Corbin, b-girl Yoda, Diverse Art Center, Rock the School Bells Hawaii, University of Hawaii at Manoa, US Vets Barber's Point Kapolei, Shriners Hospitals For Children for making it possible. I've also compiled on this blog post photos and videos of this year's human beatbox workshops.

As some of you are aware, this year, I considered joining the Air Force. Back in August, I went to Coast Guard recruiting for information, because the Air Force recruiting relocated. Then I went to Navy recruiting's new location, because Air Force recruiting weren't in. With zero preparation, I took my first pre-ASVAB test at Navy recruiting and my score qualified me to join any of the branches. As a mathematician I scored well in Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematical Knowledge. I also did well in Paragraph Comprehension. Then as weeks went by, I decided not to join, because of my career commitments for 2018. Then my desire to join the Air Force came up again, and this month with zero preparation, I went to Air Force recruiting to take my second pre-ASVAB test. I scored higher than the previous pre-ASVAB test. I scored well in my Word Knowledge and Mathematical Knowledge. I did about the same in Paragraph Comprehension. I missed problems that I should not have for my Arithmetic Reasoning. Overall, it felt good that I did it to know what it would be like. Then I decided finally that I will fulfill my commitments as Father God pointed out to me and revealed to me that things are already mapped out for me and my professional career where I am booked for gigs from this month of November all the way through December 2018, as well as projects that will launch in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Air Force was an option, but in this season my career option trumped my decision in joining the Air Force.

Be bold! When a topic is controversial and you feel strongly about it, be unafraid to speak out in public even when in error. Most of us don't care about how politically correct a person can be over how authentic and real he or she is. It's how we learn from one another as long as we're appropriate to one another. Most of the time when we are in error we learn more. That does not mean to be intentionally in error like a troll would be, but it is good to give our best effort to speak out on tough and sensitive topics. No one cares if we are always right. Even a mathematically cannot always be right, but that mathematician will find a way to learn from his or her math errors. If you only spoke out when you are right, then you will not grow into tackling tougher topics. The moment you feel you need to stay silent on tough issues is the moment you've allowed yourself to be passive about an issue that does concern you. We have a voice for our generation. Be that voice. Use your voice. Be passionate and use your voice to advocate on the topics you want to be heard.
Do not tolerate cyber, spirit and adult bullies. Know that you are not the victim, because it is he or she who is hurting more. When someone takes numerous rude and disrespectful jabs at you in a private message. It's a form of passive aggressive behavior that yes, some do partake on social media also known as cyber bullying and also a spirit bully. It is also a form of cyber harassment. Then this person writes you privately to request you delete a post when it is not disrespectful. Know it's your voice and you are allowed to have a voice. Do not be silent about it. Tip: do not write back aggressively, just write to tell him or her assertively, \
