Nicole Paris and Ed Cage: A beatboxing lesson from a father-daughter duo

December 11, 2015 at 10:56AM

Nicole Paris was raised to be a beatboxer — when she was young, her father, Ed Cage, used to beatbox her to sleep at night. Now the duo is known for their beatbox battles and jam sessions, which mix classic rap beats with electronic dance sounds. Prepare yourself for a bit of a hip-hop history lesson, and enjoy the show.

#1 video on Beatbox Battle TV

November 24, 2010 at 06:47PM

Wow, I found out that one of my recent videos (from my HAT Party blog entry) got featured as "Jason Tom from Hawaii" on the Beatbox Battle TV network, the world's largest beatboxing archive. What an honor! Maximum respect to Beatbox Battle!!!!

Then to my biggest surprise "Jason Tom from Hawaii" skyrocketed to the top as a TOP 10 clip from #7 to #1. It fell off temporarily and climbed back up from#9 to #1. Thanks to you the supporters that have viewed, rated, and commented on the video. I want to thank you all for making the video #1!

Aloha for Haiti

January 21, 2010 at 03:21PM

Next week Friday (January 29th) at the Mercury Bar Cherry Blossom Cabaret presents Aloha For Haiti. 100% of the proceeds to benefit Doctors Without Borders (http://www.doctorswithoutborders.org), an international medical humanitarian organization that provides aid in nearly 60 countries to people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe. Taking a fun and funny approach to fundraising, “Aloha for Haiti” will feature performances from an all-star lineup from Honolulu’s art scene.

Scheduled to perform at this year’s fundraiser on January 29, 9pm-2am are Cherry Blossom Cabaret, Willow Chang, Samba Axe, Bridget Gray, Dakini Dance Company, Jason Tom, Laughtrack Theater, DJ Jetboy and DJ Rolando de la Vega.

Jason Tom opens for Michael Winslow

December 22, 2009 at 05:40PM

I will be opening up for the human sound-effects machine/comedian Michael Winslow on Wednesday, December 30th (next week) at Pipeline Cafe. Real stoked. I grew up watching the Police Academy movies.

Jason Tom TEDxHNL

November 4, 2009 at 11:16AM

This TEDTalks' video was filmed on February 2003 (though posted on October 2008), filmed more than a year before I started performing as a beatboxer. Now when I watch it again I find it to be inspiring hearing his snares, vocal turntable techniques, and style. He is quite original.

On May 14, 2009 my general manager sent me this video of James "AudioPoet" Burchfield. Prior to that I googled "beatbox poet" since I find myself mostly connected with the Hawaiʻi poetry scene (as opposed to the Hawaiʻi hip-hop scene) as a beatboxer, and that same vid popped up. My first impression was that it reminded me of a similar setting of a performance I did on February 9, 2009 as a guest artist for a UH Manoa speech class. I even had the same mic set up.

Reason I bring …

Word of Life Emerge and ISA LA 09

September 2, 2009 at 09:56AM

I performed for Emergeʻs "5 Minutes of Fame" event at the Word of Life Christian Center (WOLCC) this past Friday, and I had a good time. Of my 5 years of live beatbox performing experience I personally consider WOLCC to have the best live sound system and stage on the island.

I performed...

- Romans 12:2 (a scripture from the Holy Bible NIV)
- Billie Jean by Michael Jackson (with the dance intro, vocals, and the moonwalk)
- Listen Carefully by Jason Tom (one of my originals with vocals)
- then I capped it off with an idea I worked on that same morning just to experiment live for the first time as an outro

Since Iʻm currently very limited to my Internet access I might as well post up whatʻs coming up now on this blog...

1. Iʻll be filming for a half…

The Movement featuring ABDC Quest Crew on DVD

August 12, 2009 at 01:52AM

*Scans of the July 12th event program for the Movement

Last month (July 12th) I opened up for America's Best Dance Crew (ABDC) Quest Crew for the Movement at the McKinley High School Auditorium.

I'm also an alumnus of McKinley High School, and I was featured in McKinley High School's student newspaper the Pinion (the final issue for the 2008-2009 school year) less than a month prior. It was fun performing in front of a crowd expecting to see a full on dance show, and as the crowd settled in I opened up the dance event as a solo human beat box act with a breakdown boogie down near the end.

The Movement is now available on DVD. In the DVD it features my performance opener, Hypersquad, Studio 808, Honolulu Dance Studio, Nixp…

Jason Tom Word of Life performance

December 1, 2008 at 05:30PM

I was browsing the web, and found out only today that this is uploaded:

That's me performing at the Word of Life talent contest on October 2008, and following this performance I held a beatbox workshop at Word of Life Academy. I was invited to Word of Life for these specific events by different parties, and knew of the beatbox workshop first. This video showcases my first time at Word of Life, and I now consider Word of Life my home church. Praise the Lord!

Jason Tom's Online Birthday Party!

November 21, 2008 at 10:50AM

Welcome to my online birthday party!

Makana and Jason Tom: amazing turnout!

September 14, 2008 at 09:05AM

This past Art After Dark "Hawai`i Ink" event on August 29th, 2008 at the Honolulu Academy of Arts featured Hawaiian slack key guitar master Makana. This event had an amazing turnout, especially those who came to see Makana, and I rock it out. People stood, and even sat on beach mats layering the wet grass from earlier poured rain just to experience the evening with us on that Central Court stage. MELE were also on hand to document my live moment with Makana as part of a reality series project starring MELE students.

Supporters came out in the bunches, and called out to me as I stood waiting in the wings ready to perform. That night also featured a stellar line up of Manu, The Resophonics, Kealoha, Indai, Halau Mohala `Ilima, and DJ Hi-Lo.

Be bold! When a topic is controversial and you feel strongly about it, be unafraid to speak out in public even when in error. Most of us don't care about how politically correct a person can be over how authentic and real he or she is. It's how we learn from one another as long as we're appropriate to one another. Most of the time when we are in error we learn more. That does not mean to be intentionally in error like a troll would be, but it is good to give our best effort to speak out on tough and sensitive topics. No one cares if we are always right. Even a mathematically cannot always be right, but that mathematician will find a way to learn from his or her math errors. If you only spoke out when you are right, then you will not grow into tackling tougher topics. The moment you feel you need to stay silent on tough issues is the moment you've allowed yourself to be passive about an issue that does concern you. We have a voice for our generation. Be that voice. Use your voice. Be passionate and use your voice to advocate on the topics you want to be heard.
