Iolani School Boy Scouts

April 28, 2017 at 09:59PM

The number one fear in the world? Public speaking. Growing up on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu, I'd shake or freeze up from nervousness and shyness when speaking in front of class among my peers. Made me quite self-conscious. I preferred being in the audience and I feared having the spotlight. Fast forward to today, having performed live beatboxing music and having done public speaking engagements such as the first and second TEDx Talks in Honolulu and other engagements in hip-hop culture classrooms in universities and events through 13 years have compelled me to get out of my comfort zone to develop my current personality and today, I no longer get the jitters unless I stop practicing and training. Earlier tonight, I spoke publicly in front of Hawaii's 4th graders…

Music Business And Audio Engineering

April 28, 2017 at 11:24AM

I stopped by the Mike Curb College MELE Program offered through Belmont University and University of Hawaii at Honolulu Community College advocated by Hawaii's former 2-term Governor Linda Lingle and Lieutenant Governor Duke Aiona. And while at Honolulu Community College to meet up with my friend early this week I ran into two current MELE Music Business and Audio Engineering students. Long story short, after our formal introduction, they tell me, "get out, you're Jason Tom, our teacher spoke about you this morning and how you're one of the top beatboxers in this world." I said, "wow, really? You mean Eric Lagrimas? He was my former teacher in the Mike Curb MELE Program." They responded, "yes, he covered about hip-hop music and he mentioned your name." Thank you …

April 24, 2017 at 12:00PM

Nuggets. "Nuggets" is the newly created category for my JasonTom.com Blog. I've been coming up with nuggets I want to publish and author here. What are nuggets? These will be nugget of thoughts, some call it nuggets of wisdom, and I didn't want to chance to chicken out in pondering and presenting these thoughts to the world without fear whether it has been presented or not to those of you who do browse, stumble upon and read my blog. So here goes some for right now and you can let me know what you think of these nuggets in the comments at the jump.

  • Life Nugget: There is that saying to live each day like its our last, because life is short? How about living life like its our first? Not to neglect our past experiences of before, but to use our past a…

My Heroes and Influences

April 21, 2017 at 10:07PM

Many of my heroes and influences are the people I grew up with and some are those I have watched from afar. Many I've met and many I haven't. My heroes include my family, relatives, friends, colleagues, past and presentAcademy beatboxers, people of all walks, my fans, and the community. Here is a list of those you may or may not recognize who I have been inspired by and have been influenced by in one way or another.

  • Maximus Ornelas (Sep 7, 2001 - Feb 26, 2017; age 15)
I have not met or known of Maximus George Ornelas until today when I stumbled upon his obituary article in the Yakima Herald and I read that he had passed on due to a severe asthma attack and that one of his passions is to beatbox.

I looked if he had a Facebook and discovered he had vide…

Legend of Zelda Story at Hot Topic

April 15, 2017 at 01:22PM

Two years ago I met this trio Jennifer, Jeffrey and Charley at the Legend of Zelda section of the Ala Moana Center's Hot Topic store and one of them recognized me from one of my past performances at a hip-hop jam. I shared with them I was shopping for Legend of Zelda gear as I am about to prepare for my friend's son's 1st Birthday Party and the party theme is the Legend of Zelda. Then last year, Charley and Jennifer as well as the Kaimuki High School Band supported and voted for me in the NextNext Hawaii Music Competition and Charity Event where the proceeds from their votes went to the charity of my choice, the Ronald McDonald House Hawaii. Jennifer also shared with me that she was assisted by the Ronald McDonald House Charity and this meant so much to her a…

Thank You Inspire Youth

April 11, 2017 at 05:05AM

This was lit. I want to personally thank Inspire Youth's Pastor Clint Chinen and his head pastor Mike Kai for having me open for guest Pastor Jedidiah Thurner for Friday Night Flow at Inspire Church Waikele. We had 45 first-time decisions for Jesus Christ and 76 rededications. I've once been there for both Altar calls and I am grateful of what God has called me to do in the works of the ministry with my life and the life of others including the children, youth and young adults who made Friday Night Flow happen. I also want to thank Josh Williams also known as J Wills for beatboxing with me to close Friday Night Flow. And Josiah for beatbox battling me to assist me in setting the tone of Friday Night Flow evening prior to me opening for Jedidiah Thurner in the mai…

Ukulele And Beatbox Lesson

April 11, 2017 at 01:13AM

Jody Kamisato and Jason Tom with this Ukulele Beatbox Collaborative Tutorial. An ukulele which means "jumping flea" is a 4-string instrument and is an adaptation of the Portuguese machete. The ukulele was invented in our Hawaiian islands during the plantation period and was introduced into our Hawaiian music culture throughout our Hawaiian islands that eventually spread throughout the United States of America and the world. It's an instrument that nearly all residents young and old of our Hawaiian islands pick up and start playing and have probably at one point picked up playing and tried it. Beatboxing originates in a cappella vocal art tradition from the musical stylings and genre of jazz with scat singing and the urban hip-hop music culture and can be traced e…

Thank You Lord

April 10, 2017 at 09:53AM

Lord, I come boldly and humbly before your throne room of grace and mercy that endures forever in great Thanksgiving and with my whole heart fully surrendered to you. I praise you Lord, and I dedicate my life and career to you as a living testimony. I am forever grateful for your forgiveness, mercy, grace, patience, understanding, goodness, kindness, faithfulness, joy, love, provision, long-suffering, and your Mighty Hand of protection over my life and the lives of others and so many around the world. I also thank you for your deliverance, wisdom and guidance. I am grateful of having your watch over my life, because I nearly died from incoming traffic last year. You resurrected my Spirit Man in time of tremendous despair and now you're taking me into a season of …

In 2015, I was one of the male professional beatboxers to be nominated as a competitor in the men solo battle category of the 4th Beatbox Battle World Championship held in Berlin, Germany. Be bold! When a topic is controversial and you feel strongly about it, be unafraid to speak out in public even when in error. Most of us don't care about how politically correct a person can be over how authentic and real he or she is. It's how we learn from one another as long as we're appropriate to one another. Most of the time when we are in error we learn more. That does not mean to be intentionally in error like a troll would be, but it is good to give our best effort to speak out on tough and sensitive topics. No one cares if we are always right. Even a mathematically cannot always be right, but that mathematician will find a way to learn from his or her math errors. If you only spoke out when you are right, then you will not grow into tackling tougher topics. The moment you feel you need to stay silent on tough issues is the moment you've allowed yourself to be passive about an issue that does concern you. We have a voice for our generation. Be that voice. Use your voice. Be passionate and use your voice to advocate on the topics you want to be heard.
Do not tolerate cyber, spirit and adult bullies. Know that you are not the victim, because it is he or she who is hurting more. Then this person writes you privately to request you delete a post when it is not disrespectful. Know it's your voice and you are allowed to have a voice. Do not be silent about it. Tip: do not write back aggressively, just write to tell him or her assertively, \
